Run with me
Knowing retail is knowing neighborhoods. One of the ways I get to know neighborhoods and keep up on developments in Boston/Cambridge retail scene is by running. Running, like biking, is an amazing way to gain an understanding/sense of urban places. There is so much missed when you are in a car.
Yesterday was not a particularly nice day but it was relatively warm (high 30s). I went for my first significant run of 2010. I took the above route and got to check-in on a handful of Boston neighborhoods. Here are some of the take-aways from my run:
- The development on the corner of Albany Street and Mass. Ave at Boston Medical Center is still lifeless.
- There’s a Pete’s Coffee and Jamba Juice (shared space) in the new Northeastern University Residential Village on Tremont Street. I was very surprised that they were both closed on a Saturday.
- Tremont Street leading into Brigham Circle seems to have some new business and new vacancies. It’s late February, so Jackson Hewitt and H&R Block are actually open for business on this stretch. After tax season they’ll close for another 9 months. Terrible… (read more)
- Samuels & Associates is continuing its efforts to develop and lease retail on Boylston Street in the Fenway area. The Trilogy building is almost all leased and the new building on 1330 Boylston is coming along. Basho (high-end Japanese concept) buildout is in full swing right next to the Upper Crust.
- Jerry Remy’s new restaurant (it’s his name – I’m not sure if he licensed name or actually is an owner of the spot) is taking shape adjacent to Fenway Park on Boylston and should be open by baseball season.
- Red Mango’s first Boston location (intersection Huntington Ave. and Mass Ave.) is still open and still not busy. Strange location for Red Mango.
- The last leg of my run was through the South End, which has seen a good deal of change over the winter. Lambert’s Market, Sage, Banq and Pho Republic were some of the most notable closings. The most interesting openings have been South End Athletic Company and Coppa, the later being Ken Oringer and Jamie Bissonnette’s newest restaurant concept.
I’ll spare you the details of my future runs but I’ll be taking more of the same notes as the weather improves and I start jogging and biking more.
